How Much Does Custom Software Development Cost?

There's no single number — but there is a reliable way to think about what drives cost up or down, before you ask anyone for a quote.

"How much will this cost?" is usually the first question in a project inquiry, and it's a reasonable one to ask early — but a real answer depends on variables that aren't decided yet at that point in the conversation. What's more useful than a number is understanding what actually moves the number.

The variables that actually drive cost

  • Scope depth: a single-platform MVP with core flows only costs far less than a multi-platform product with an admin panel, integrations, and edge-case handling.
  • Platform count: web-only is cheaper than web + iOS + native Android, though React Native narrows that gap for mobile.
  • Integrations: every third-party system (payments, SMS, existing internal tools) adds integration and testing work.
  • Real-time or hardware requirements: live location tracking, IoT device integration, and similar requirements add engineering complexity beyond a standard CRUD application.
  • Design maturity: a project starting from a validated design system moves faster than one that needs UX research and visual design from scratch.

Why a website calculator can't give you a real number

Two projects that both say "e-commerce app with 20 features" can have wildly different costs depending on what those features actually require underneath. A generic online calculator can only ever give a rough band — which is exactly what our own estimator does, and exactly why we label it indicative rather than a quotation. A real number comes out of Discovery, once scope is actually understood.

How engagement model affects cost structure

A Fixed Project engagement gives you a defined price for a defined scope — the more settled your requirements are, the better this model works. A Dedicated Team or Product Partnership is priced differently (typically a recurring rate for ongoing capacity) because the work itself is open-ended by design. Neither is inherently cheaper; they suit different situations. See our

If your requirements are still evolving, a Dedicated Team engagement usually produces a better outcome than forcing a Fixed Project scope prematurely — you pay for flexibility instead of paying twice for a rescoped fixed contract.

What actually gets you an accurate number

A short Discovery conversation, even an informal one, does more for cost accuracy than any calculator. We'd rather spend 30 minutes understanding what you're actually building than hand you a number that's wrong in either direction.
